L-Carnitine is a non-essential amino acid the body synthesizes in the liver and kidneys from lysine and methionine (two amino acids). The main job for L-Carnitine, and the reason that it is such a popular weight loss product, is to transfer long chain fats from storage and into the bodies energy producing structures called mitochondria.
This movement of fat from storage into muscle tissue accelerates a person’s fat loss by taking energy directly from the source and placing it where it can be burned immediately. L-Carnitine is great for use before a cardiovascular training session, especially if the session is right in the morning before you have eaten any food. That is the time the body uses fat more readily as an energy source – L-Carnitine shoots that into overdrive! This increased availability of fat energy will slow the use of muscle for energy during a calorie restricted diet.
L-Carnitine is also excellent for the endurance activity enthusiast. Endurance athletes rely heavily on carbohydrates to keep their body working hard during a race, or game. But once the stored carbohydrates (glycogen) diminish the body turns to fat for energy. Taking L-Carnitine before the activity will provide the body with fat energy much quicker than relying solely on the natural process.
